An Evangelical’s Guide to Lent – CTJ #47

We are about two weeks into the Lenten season this year so this week we have Paul Gutaker back on the show to discuss Lent.  We wanted to talk about what it is, what is the purpose, what should we do, and the application personally and corporately in the church.  As always, we find ourselves talking about a lot of the surrounding issues but discover some good guidelines for our attitude and activities during this particular season.

I’m Going Catholic With Russ Wills – CTJ #46

We are going Catholic!  Well, not really us… we have Russ Wills on to discuss his experience in going from the Protestant Evangelical side of Christianity to Catholicism (aka the Dark Side).  We wanted to get his perspective on the “deal breakers” that most evangelicals are taught against Catholicism and see what we can learn.  While we hadn’t the time to cover every topic, we had an open and honest discussion on salvation and works, praying to saints, infant baptism, and more.

Sabbath for Christians? – CTJ #45

Sabbath for Christians?!?

This week we cover the topic of Sabbath in the believer’s life.  We try to answer the question, could the intention of Sabbath in the OT law have application to believers living today in a post Jesus age?  We have a special guest, Paul Gutaker, on this episode to aid the discussion of developing a mindset that looks back to the OT roots and use it to practice Sabbath even today.

Toxic Masculinity & Gillette – CTJ #44

Here we are in Episode #44, about to get ourselves in trouble.  We decided to take on some recent viral news, the Gillette ad.  While our segway story left a bit to be desired our purpose in talking about this topic is start the discussion of where toxic masculinity comes from, dispel any rumor that the Bible is to blame, and encourage all of us to be the men, or women, that God called us to be.  Let’s join the conversation for this week.

God(s) of the Bible?

We have recently been introduced to a theology called “The Divine Council” to explain God’s hosts of heavens that were created to rule on His behalf.  We decided to have an introductory discussion on the concept of “God” in the Bible and the groundwork for the Divine Council worldview.  We will say over and over that we are not biblical scholars but we wanted to bring these ideas to our listeners and start a discussion about the impacts of a variety of gods (small g) ruling in the world, both still in submission to Him and in rebellion to Him.

Can Christians Change Views? Part 2: CTJ #42

This is the second half of our discussion about Christians changing views throughout our lives.  We continue the topic and talk about maturity in our faith and how maturity lends itself into growing past some views while becoming more firm in others.  The challenge to each of us is to focus on the commands of scripture and how to apply them to every aspect of our lives.  Join us as we finish out this interesting conversation.

Can Christians Change Views? Part 1: CTJ #41

When we are new Christians, we develop absolutes as to what we think is 100% right and 100% wrong rather quickly.  Without a doubt, some truths in the Bible are very clear and remain this way throughout life.  What we discuss in this podcast are perhaps some of the “secondary truths” that as we mature, we learn more about grace and have an open mind of various interpretations.  Join us as we discuss changing views, the local church and worship, and so much more in the first part of this two part series.

When a Christian Doubts: Part 2 – CTJ #40

This is the second episode of a two part series on doubt in the Christian’s life.  In this episode we begin to dissect how to address doubt and fuel the growth that should come along with it!   Have you ever struggled with doubt as a follower of Jesus and couldn’t understand why or how to even deal with it?  Perhaps you have asked yourself “What happens when a Christian doubts?”  Let us be the first to say, you are not alone!  We have struggled with everything from “Is there even a God, really” to “Is living a moral life really worth it?”  And, these are really struggles that at some point, every believer goes through in one degree or another.  Not everyone’s doubt is the same but I think there are similar ways to approach and address the doubt in our lives.

In our culture, doubt typically has a negative connotation, but the scripture has many examples of human doubt which ended in huge spiritual and personal growth.  We talk through some of the help we have available to us and how we can grow from these doubtful time in our lives.

When a Christian Doubts: Part 1 – CTJ #39

Have you ever struggled with doubt as a follower of Jesus and couldn’t understand why or how to even deal with it?  Perhaps you have asked yourself “What happens when a Christian doubts?”  Let us be the first to say, you are not alone!  We have struggled with everything from “Is there even a God, really” to “Is living a moral life really worth it?”  And, these are really struggles that at some point, every believer goes through in one degree or another.  Not everyone’s doubt is the same but I think there are similar ways to approach and address the doubt in our lives.  This is the first episode of a two part series on doubt in the Christian’s life and how to recognize and address it biblically.  In these episodes we reference Job’s circumstance as well as that of the Psalm of Asaph (Psalm 73).   It is comforting to know that when a Christian doubts, it is not something foreign to God and there are scriptural examples and principles that we can go to that will help us in these times to grow!

Christianity & Church Culture – CTJ #38

This is episode #38, and is the first time where we get so derailed from the Christian in the News segment that it overtakes the whole podcast.  We discuss Christianity and the local church model and how history gives us some insight into current practices.  We will look to turn this into a much deeper discussion in the future but we hope you enjoy the brief overview this week.
